kids jiu jitsu

At 85 Jiu Jitsu, our kids’ programs are designed to help children grow in confidence, discipline, and kindness while learning practical self-defense in a safe and supportive environment. Each age group trains in classes tailored to their stage of development — balancing fun, focus, and skill-building.

Our younger groups (ages 3–8) meet twice per week for 30-minute sessions to match developing attention spans and keep classes energetic, age-appropriate, and engaging.

As students mature, they move into the Youth Fundamentals program (ages 9–12) with longer classes, more technical instruction, and up to four training opportunities per week to build consistency, confidence, and mastery.

No matter their age or experience, every child at 85 Jiu Jitsu learns to move safely, train respectfully, and carry the lessons of discipline and teamwork beyond the mats.

Programs

Little rollers (3 - 5)

  • Class Length: 30 minutes | Schedule: 2× per week

Our youngest students build balance, coordination, and confidence through movement-based games and simple jiu-jitsu skills.

Classes are short by design—just long enough to keep young minds focused and bodies active. We emphasize safety, listening, teamwork, and having fun while learning the foundations of respect and discipline.

junior rollers (ages 6 - 8)

  • Class Length: 30 minutes | Schedule: 2× per week

This age group begins to connect play with real technique. Students learn basic positions, escapes, and control through interactive drills that keep them moving and engaged.

Classes remain short, fast-paced and age-appropriate to build focus, coordination, and confidence—always in a positive, safe environment where kids learn to work together.

youth fundamentals (Ages 9 - 12)

  • Class Length: 45 minutes | Schedule: 4× per week

Our Youth Fundamentals program introduces structured technique and deeper understanding of jiu-jitsu. Students learn self-defense principles, strategy, and respect for their training partners while continuing to develop discipline and resilience.

Longer classes and more weekly options let motivated students train consistently and progress at their own pace under close instructor guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Absolutely. At 85 Jiu Jitsu, safety comes first.

Our youth classes are structured by age and experience, and contact is introduced gradually. Kids learn control and awareness—not aggression. Every class is supervised closely, and all our coaches are trained in injury prevention, first aid, and CPR.

  • We take hygiene seriously. Mats are cleaned daily with hospital-grade disinfectant, and students must wear a clean gi and rashguard to every class.

Nails are checked before training, and anyone with cuts or illness rests until fully recovered. A clean mat keeps everyone healthy and confident.

  • Our kids’ instructors are background-checked and experienced in working with children. They’re not just athletes—they’re educators who understand child development, motivation, and communication.

Each class is run by a lead instructor with assistant coaches to maintain a safe coach-to-student ratio.

  • Our programs are designed to help kids grow on and off the mat.

Younger students (ages 3–8) build coordination, balance, and confidence through fun, structured games.

Older students (9–12 and teens) progress into technical jiu-jitsu, learning problem-solving, discipline, and focus in a positive, encouraging space.

  • No long-term commitments, no hidden fees. We offer flexible monthly memberships and make all costs—tuition, sign-up packages, and any gear—completely transparent.

Families can cancel or pause anytime with notice, and we offer a free trial so you can experience our culture before joining.

  • Never required, always supported.

Some kids love competition; others just enjoy the training. We encourage healthy goals—whether that’s tournaments, fitness, or self-confidence. Our coaches guide each child individually and celebrate progress, not medals.

  • We have a zero-tolerance policy for bullying. Our core values—kindness, respect, confidence, and friendship—are woven into every class. Coaches address negative behavior immediately and turn every challenge into a learning moment. Every child should feel safe and supported here.

  • Two classes per week is perfect for most kids starting out, especially our younger students. As they grow in skill and enthusiasm, they can attend more often. We strongly encourage balance with school, family, and other activities—jiu-jitsu should build their life, not take it over.

  • Yes! Parents are always welcome in our viewing area - we have curated a comfortable environment where you can watch, work, read or even connect with other parents.

We ask that you stay off the mats to keep class focused and safe, but your presence is encouraged. You’ll see how we teach discipline, teamwork, and confidence through positive reinforcement.

  • In most cases, yes.

Jiu-jitsu can be adapted to different abilities, and we’re happy to discuss your child’s needs privately. With your doctor’s approval, we’ll make sure they train safely and feel included every step of the way.
