Adult jiu jitsu

Our adult program welcomes everyone—from complete beginners to experienced practitioners—into a supportive, ego-free environment built around safety, respect, and growth. Whether your goal is fitness, self-defense, competition, or stress relief, our structured curriculum helps you build skill and confidence at your own pace.

We offer eight classes per week plus an open mat, with a balanced mix of Gi (4 classes) and No-Gi (4 classes) sessions so you can train in both traditional and modern styles of jiu-jitsu. Fundamentals are reinforced in every class, and students are encouraged to train consistently while listening to their bodies and setting personal goals.

At 85 Jiu Jitsu, we focus on controlled technique, practical self-defense, and creating a training culture where everyone—regardless of age, athletic background, or experience—feels welcome, challenged, and supported.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Absolutely. Most of our adult students start with zero experience. You don’t need to be strong, flexible, or athletic to begin. Our fundamentals program focuses on learning the basics step by step, with plenty of guidance and patience. Jiu-jitsu meets you where you are.

  • No one is too old or too out of shape. We have students in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond. The goal isn’t to be an athlete—it’s to improve your health, confidence, and skill over time. You set the pace; we’ll support you along the way.

  • Safety is our highest priority. New students learn how to fall, move, and tap properly before any live training. We pair beginners with experienced partners and keep sparring controlled. You’ll never be thrown into situations you’re not ready for.

  • Not at all. We introduce sparring gradually once you’re comfortable with the fundamentals. When you do start rolling, you’ll work with calm, respectful partners who understand how to train safely with beginners.

  • That’s completely normal. Every black belt started out confused. Our coaches break techniques into simple, repeatable steps and check in often. Over time, things click faster than you expect. Consistency beats talent every time.

  • Very. Mats are disinfected daily, and we require clean gear every session. If you have a cut, rash, or illness, just let us know—we’ll help you stay healthy and return safely. Hygiene is everyone’s responsibility, and we take it seriously.

  • No—you can borrow one for your trial class and when you sign up, your membership comes with everything you need to train!

We’ll help you choose the right size and fit. All you need for day one is comfortable workout clothes and an open mind.

  • Everyone is, at first. Our members are trained to take care of new partners and help you learn safely. Respect and control are non-negotiable here—no egos, no rough behavior. You can always say no to a roll—no explanation needed, no questions asked. Whether you’re tired, sore, or just not feeling it, your comfort and safety come first. We focus on building skill, not proving strength.

  • Two classes per week is ideal for beginners. That’s enough to build consistency and skill without burning out. As you grow more confident, you can add classes or attend open mats at your own pace.

But hey - we know life gets busy! Train as much or as little as you can, we’ll always be here.

  • Usually because they got injured, overwhelmed, or discouraged early on. At 85 Jiu Jitsu, we prevent that by keeping training safe, beginner-friendly, and community-driven. Progress is personal—your only competition is yesterday’s you.

  • Never. Competitions are optional.

Some students love testing themselves, others just train for fitness and personal growth. Whatever your goal, we’ll help you reach it without pressure.

  • Absolutely. Many of our members joined solo and quickly became part of the 85 family. Our culture is built on respect, kindness, and support—you’ll feel welcome from day one.

But if you’re really nervous, bring a friend! You can always do your trial class together.
